How Your Wood Pen is Created
A wood species or acrylic, hardware style kit, metal
plating, and pen profile are chosen.
The wood dimensions are carefully prepared by cutting,
drilling, gluing and squaring the wood blanks.
The wood blanks are mounted on a mandrel and skillfully
hand carved using chisels on a professional Jet mini lathe.
Then it is delicately sanded by hand to refine the shape
and feel of the barrels. This sanding process is done with a progressive
sanding method beginning at 220 grit and ending at 2000 grit while the lathe
turns at 4000 rpm.
Once the desired smoothness is acquired, a micro fine
abrasive wood sealer is applied, which smoothes the barrels further. Then
several coatings of finish are applied and buffed into the material with a
quality safe Shellac wax, which creates a brilliant shine. A Carnauba wax
is applied for protection against moisture. These coatings are worked into
the wood to accent the grain pattern, deepen its color, protect the wood, and
gloss the barrels for presentation.
Finally, the pen is carefully assembled with a professional
pen press, and the internal writing mechanism is tested.
Then the pen is cured for 72 hours in a cool dark dry
environment, which will allow the wax to set up and harden.
Your pen is now ready to enjoy!
Customize Your Pen
You can personalize your handcrafted pen to meet your
needs. There are many different features to create your pen. These include:
Style (Emperor, Classic Elite, CEO, etc),
Metal Plating (Platinum, 24kt Gold, Copper, etc),
Wood Blank (Exotic, Dyed, Laminated, etc),
Acrylic Blank (Swirls, Marbled, Speckled, etc),
Other Materials (Buffalo Horn, Stone, Snakeskin, etc),
Profiles (Rounded, Closed-End, Beaded, etc).
Don’t leave your handcrafted pen lying around, but maintain
its value by getting a velvet pouch or pen box. Both can be used to present
your pen as a gift, and store it while not in use. A pen box can display its
beauty on your desk.
Note
Pen prices will vary due to pen style, metal plating, wood
species, profile, and box. Many rare and exotic wood species are acquired from around the
world such as Africa, Australia, North/Central/South America, Tropical Climates,
"The Holy Land” Israel, India, Asia, and other places, which will make your pen a "one
of a kind". Also, I custom make many other small turnings on a lathe such
as game calls, yoyos, peppermills, hourglasses and many other items. Visit
my products link to get more ideas for your custom
wood handcrafted gifts.
Maintenance
If the pen barrel wood becomes scratched, you can simply
buff a new coat of wax by hand into the wood with a wood wax (paste wax) and a
clean cotton cloth. I can restore your pen for you on a high speed professional buffer
if you prefer. Also, when your ink is gone, just refill it with a standard ink
refill from any local office supply store.
Recommendations
Do not leave your pen in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
Do not leave your pen in a hot car or in direct sunlight.
It will fade the wood and ruin the fine finish. Acrylics are a plastic
resin which will melt in the heat. Remember that stabilized wood are
pressure treated with acrylic resins.
Do not use chemicals on your pen to cleaning it.
Do not immerse your pen in water.
Do not use an abrasives, which are in many detergents, to
clean your pen or metal plating.
Clean your pen with a damp cotton clothe and if inclined, a
very mild diluted dish soap. Wipe dry immediately with soft cotton clothe.
