    Pencils i think

  • WhatBrain?:

The ink isn’t a problem nor the graphite of pencils. Wood is a renewable resource (unless the environazis get their way). Plastic, however, is made from oil and a chemical process so pencils are better.

    PENCILS
wood comes back and we use too much plastic.

  • DAV0:

as plastic is made from oil i guess your going to be using pencils for a while

  • sunny:

pencils are worse for the environment because we cut trees to make pencils and it is harmful for the environment witch trees make the air fresh.

  • Maeve:

Pens are worse for the environment because they are made out of plastic, which is made from oil, which is a non-renewable resource. This means that the resource can not be occur naturally in a useful time period for use. Also, plastic takes many years to decompose into the soil and the ink can be absorbed into the surrounding ecosystem causing problems. Pencils, on the other hand, are made from wood which is a renewable resource. Also, graphite is a natural resource so it will not hurt the ecosystem.

If that were a major environmental problem, we would be in great shape.

  • People drive me nuts:

Both. Those things should be ban. We should do everything electronically.

    Haha. Interesting question!

I think pens are worse for the environment because, as many people have stated, they are primarily made from plastic which is made from oil, a nonrenewable resource. And ink is made from chemicals, which would be bad for the environment. However, there are also biodegradable pens available, so those aren’t as bad. And the issue of disposal is also very important I think because people use disposable pens, that are just thrown in landfills… I wonder if they’re recyclable… I hope they are!

Pencils are better for the environment, but only if the source of the “wooden” pencils are responsibly managed. Trees are “renewable” but only if they are not sustainably used (ie cut at the same time in a tree farm… rather than promoting different growth forest), which happens a lot more often than you think.
